Do I have to use my insurer's body shop?

After an accident, your insurance company may point you toward a shop from their "preferred" or direct-repair network. It's a fair question to ask: do you actually have to use them? In Ontario, the short answer is no.

The choice of repair shop is yours

Ontario drivers have the right to choose where their vehicle is repaired. Your insurer can recommend a shop, but they cannot force you to use one. You're free to select any licensed collision facility you trust — including one that isn't on their list.

Why insurers have preferred networks

Direct-repair programs exist because they're convenient for the insurer: pre-negotiated rates and a streamlined process. Many of those shops do good work. • Do they have strong, consistent reviews?

Will it cost me more?

Generally, no. Your coverage pays for the repair whether or not the shop is in the insurer's network. A reputable independent shop will work directly with your insurer, submit the estimate, and handle supplements and approvals on your behalf — just like a network shop would. If there's ever a gap between what the insurer approves and what a proper repair requires, a good shop will explain your options rather than cut corners.
