Paintless dent repair: what it is and when it works

Repaired door panel — paintless dent repair explained

Paintless dent repair (PDR) can make small dents disappear faster and cheaper than traditional bodywork — while keeping your original factory paint completely intact. But it isn't right for every dent. Here's how it works and when it's the best choice.

What is paintless dent repair?

PDR is a technique where a trained technician carefully massages a dent out from behind the panel using specialized tools, gradually working the metal back to its original shape. Because nothing is sanded, filled or repainted, your factory finish stays exactly as it was.

The advantages

  • Keeps your original paint — no colour-match needed
  • Faster — often same-day
  • More affordable than conventional repair
  • Better for resale value (no repainted panels)

When PDR is a great fit

Paintless dent repair works best when the paint is unbroken and the metal isn't stretched too far. Ideal candidates include:

  • Door dings from parking lots
  • Minor hail damage
  • Shallow, round dents on accessible panels
  • Small creases where the paint is intact

When you need conventional repair instead

PDR has limits. If the paint is cracked, chipped or scratched, or the metal is stretched, torn, or on a very sharp body line or panel edge, traditional repair is the right approach — filling, sanding, priming and repainting to a colour-matched finish. Dents near the edge of a panel or over structural braces may also be inaccessible for PDR.

Not sure which your dent needs? Send us a photo — we'll tell you honestly whether PDR will do the job or whether conventional repair is the smarter fix.

How we decide

At AutoStyle Collision we assess every dent individually and recommend the method that gives you the best result for the lowest reasonable cost. If PDR will restore the panel invisibly, that's usually the way to go. If it won't, we'll explain why and show you what conventional repair involves — no upselling.
